In Bandung, Indonesia, a youth-led initiative has transformed the underused space beneath the iconic Pasopati Flyover into a vibrant public area featuring a film park, football field, and community events space. Kami Ruang Ketiga (The Third Space) team has revitalized a once-neglected part of the city, turning it into a welcoming and inclusive space for local youth. The success of this initiative led to its formal recognition as an NGO, ensuring continued support and sustainability.
This transformation is part of the Safe and Sound Cities programme, run by the Global Infrastructure Basel Foundation. The programme empowers young people in different parts of the world to identify local safety challenges and collaborate with stakeholders to develop and implement creative urban interventions. These projects focus on reclaiming underused city spaces, making them safer, more inclusive, and responsive to the everyday needs of a city’s young people.
Bandung, the largest city in West Java and Indonesia’s fourth most developed urban center, faces a critical shortage of green and public spaces for its predominantly young population. Many parks are poorly maintained or inaccessible, especially for teens and young adults. The Pasopati project directly addresses this gap, turning a once-dangerous, overlooked space into a thriving community asset: safe, accessible, built with youth in mind.
This initiative is a powerful example of how youth-led initiatives can address real urban challenges with creativity and care. In cities like Bandung - with large youth populations and limited access to safe, inclusive public spaces - such projects are vital. The Pasopati project shows how reimagining neglected infrastructure can improve community wellbeing, encourage civic participation, and even inspire policy change.
